My favourite author is Georgette Heyer. If you haven’t read her, do. She wasn’t just about Regency romances, despite creating the genre. Her stories spanned the centuries, from William the Conqueror to the Between-War period for her murder-mysteries. I would love to see her library and reference books.
My favourite novel, though, is by Nancy Mitford: The Pursuit of Love, with or without Love in a Cold Climate. Although I didn’t read it until I was about 13, I’d heard the story many, many times. We had an audio book of it, and my sister and I spent hours listening to it. I can still recite passages from heart, in the voice of the narrator.
And my favourite story is the Saga of the Volsungs, an Icelandic saga with everything you need: magic, treasure, a dragon, love, and tragedy. I collect translations and adaptations, my favourite being Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen. I find it quite inspiring to be writing my own fantasy to the tune of Wagner. I also collect Beowulfs.
